Well, I'm a woman and I turn to you for counsel, so from where I'm sitting, you're doing just fine.
But in a larger sense, if indeed it's a struggle for you, perhaps it's because women a) don't expect a man to want to and/or to really listen to them, and b) they expect any man who will listen will approach the given situation from the "male"/action-item perspective of "this is how you fix it" when perhaps the woman, at that moment, simply needs to talk it out.
I'm a computer geek with an oft-underexpressed, tender-artist side.
Welcome to my front porch. Set a spell, have some tea but don't get the porch swing goin' too fast. Aunt Elma dang near got killed when her boys had her swingin' so fast she 'bout fell out. Crazy woman was laughin' the whole time, too!
